Submitting your ski job application by email
Insider tips on how to put together the perfect ski chalet job application email.
Each year, we get well over 100 applications for our four chalet-host roles. We do always read everything sent to us, CVs, covering letters, emails etc. before responding. But with so many applicants, we have to be ruthless at this early stage of recruitment.
An application has to really stand out straight away amongst all of those people writing to us. Our attention needs to be grabbed in the very first covering email. Your email should stand out for its quality and professionalism.
What chalet companies don't want to read...
Most people write the very thing that chalet owners do not want to read: that the applicant loves to ski. Of course, we love the mountains ourselves, so we are thrilled that people want to ski and enjoy being in the Alps. But this really is secondary to what will bring you here - which is the job itself. The job will facilitate your skiing. As employers, this is how chalet companies will see it.

Subject: Delicious Mountain Chalet Host Application
Dear Stuart and Louise,
I hope this email finds you well.
My partner and I are looking to apply for a chalet couple role for the coming ski season. We wondered if you are still recruiting for such positions? Alternatively, perhaps you might be able to recommend local companies who are?
We came across your company having done a lot of research and really liked the look and feel of Delicious Mountain. We especially like the idea of being part of a smaller company like yourselves. We're both in our late twenties and have been together for eight years. Although we have spent a lot of time there, this would be be our first season working in The Alps so we would be looking to learn and gain experience.
We are hard working, learn quickly and have a keen eye for detail. Between us, we have a good mix of hospitality, management and catering experience having also worked in very client focused roles (see attached CVs for details). We are a sociable and friendly couple and know our way around a kitchen very well. Although we currently have no professional catering qualifications, we do intend to enrol on a chalet catering course. We are confident home cooks and enjoy catering for large groups of friends.
We would be delighted to hear from you, even if there is nothing you could offer us directly: some guidance or suggestions would be very much appreciated. In the meantime, please find attached our CVs, some recent photos of dishes we have prepared, and a menu plan we have put together for your consideration.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Why chalet companies love job applications like this one
- They have found our names (easily found on our website) and addressed the message to us personally
- They make a reference to having looked at our website and what we do and why they would like to work for us
- They focus on work, not skiing
- They draw on their experiences to show some parallels with the job we have on offer
- They attach a menu plan (pehaps with wine pairings?), as well pictures of food they have produced. This shows initiative and an understanding of the market we operate in
