Off Piste Essentials

Whether you are just passing through or you're having a luxury holiday in Meribel there are many points to keep in mind when Off Piste skiing. The marked runs of Meribel will always end at a village or a lift. With Off Piste skiing this is not always the case, the run might come to an end at a flat area with nothing around for miles. Knowing the quickest way back to civilisation when this occurs is not to be underestimated. Here's a list of tips that you might find helpful:

  • Let someone know where you are thinking of going to ski Off Piste and a general time you plan to return. This is particularly important if you are planning on going alone, (which should be avioded if possible).
  • Ensure that out set out with a clear path, that has been cleared for hazards, before setting off.
  • Get used to the difference in snow consistency. Off Piste, untainted, snow will more likely be a lot faster than snow on a well worn run. Speed on this type of snow is the name of the game as it will keep you floating on the service. A notable decrease in speed will mean that you could become anchored.
  • The difference in thickness of fresh powder also means that ou will benefit more from wider turns. Sharp, sudden turns can cut through this type of snow. Keeping your weight on the balls of your feet and keeping your knees bent while remaining as narrow as possible will ensure smooth gliding.

Off Piste Check List

Off Piste Ski Equipment

The difference in snow and the somewhat unpredictable nature of Off Piste skiing means your equipment list will need to be overhauled. Here's a list of Off Piste Ski Equipment that you might find helpful. The majority of this equipment can be hired from Ski Rental companies:

  • Skis: These will need to be the wider, Off Piste variety in order to float on the snow surface. The standard, tinner ski will slice through the fresh, deeper snow
  • Thermal Cloting
  • Avalanche Transceiver (Radio Beacon used in finding people or equipment buried under snow)
  • Probe (Allows you to gauge the burial depth of a person or piece of equipment)
  • Shovel
  • Lift pass
  • Insurance Documentation
  • Sunglasses and Ski-Goggles
  • A mobile phone with the number for a local mountain rescue saved on it
  • Snacks and drinks
  • Cash in case you need to buy supplies along the way
  • A Map. Preferably one that has been checked over for potential hazards

Heli-skiing

Heli-skiing, the use of a helicopter instead of a ski-lift to reach the start of a piste, is not currently permitted in France but is availale in Italy and Switzerland and is seen by many as the next step in Off Piste luxury skiing. Skiers are taken to a landing zone of a mountain and can ski down. The price associated with Heli-skiing means that it is a somewhat exclusive pastime. The snow, that can only be reached by helicopter, is almost guaranteed to be unmarked, especially if you are taking an early flight up.

You ski equipment is usually kept in an external basket which is loaded and unloaded by your guide. As snow conditions and flight conditions can change in these areas almost by the hour the use of experienced pilots and guides is essential.
